Das B quartet that involved prominent musicians of contemporary experimental scene — trumpeter Mazen Kerbaj, drummer Tony Buck, pianist Magda Mayas and double bass player Mike Majkowski — was founded in 2015 in Berlin. The «Canopy» album was recorded live two years later during the Konfrontationen festival in Austria — the key event in the world of improvisational music that is held for 30 years. The record consists of the full 35-minute set and small anchor which is both a powerful epigraph and an excellent teaser of the entire album.
«Canopy» perfectly demonstrates total teamwork of four sensitive musicians within complex, multifaceted post-jazz and academic improvisation. Keeping the right distance, they change the roles of their instruments: the trumpet sounds like percussion, the drums do melodies, the piano sets the rhythm, and harmonies flow from the double bass.
Most precisely what is happening on «Canopy» was described by daughters of Mazen Kerbaj — Alia and Nour — who made the colorful foliage on its cover. This herbarium of sounds, to some extent, really resembles the breath and life of a dense mixed forest — you can hear the crowns of trees closing together somewhere and quietly swinging in the wind from side to side. The rhythm of improvisation develops in waves, inflated by sensitive streams of air. The effect of deep breath and long exhale is created by Magda Mayas and Mike Majkowski — the amplitude of the sound thicket oscillations depends on translational sounds of the prepared piano and the rare bow movements along the strings of double bass. Mazen Kerbaj and Tony Buck complement this adventure trip with bright psychedelic strokes — the trumpet strives to frighten with unexpected rumble or crackling, and the percussion, fragmented into many ringing sounds, adds to the whole plot of fairy tale and magic.

Квартет Das B, в состав которого вошли выдающиеся музыканты современной экспериментальной сцены — трубач Мазен Кербаж, барабанщик Тони Бак, пианистка Магда Майас и контрабасист Майк Майковски — был сформирован в Берлине в 2015-ом году. Альбом «Canopy» был записан живьём спустя два года на австрийском фестивале Konfrontationen — ключевом событии в мире импровизационной музыки с тридцатилетней историей. Запись включает в себя полный 35-минутный сет и небольшой анкор, являющийся одновременно мощным эпиграфом и прекрасным тизером всего альбома.
«Canopy» прекрасно демонстрируют абсолютную сыгранность четырёх чутких музыкантов в сложной, слоистой пост-джазовой и академической импровизации. Соблюдая правильную дистанцию, они меняют роли своих инструментов: труба начинает звучать как ударный инструмент, барабаны играют мелодии, пианино задаёт ритм, из контрабаса льются гармонии.
Точнее всего то, что творится на «Canopy» описали дочки Мазена Кербажа — Алия и Нур — изобразив на его обложке разноцветную листву. Этот гербарий звуков в какой-то степени и вправду напоминает дыхание и жизнь густого смешанного леса — слышно будто кроны деревьев смыкаются где-то воедино и незаметно качаются на ветру из стороны в сторону. Ритм импровизации развивается волнами, раздуваемый чуткими потоками воздуха. Эффект глубокого вдоха и продолжительного выдоха создаётся Магдой Майас и Майком Майковски — амплитуда колебаний звуковой чащи зависит от поступательных звуков препарированного рояля и редких движений смычка по струнам контрабаса. Мазен Кербаж и Тони Бак дополняют эту прогулку за приключениями яркими психоделическими мазками — труба норовит напугать неожиданным рокотом или треском, а раздробленная на множество звенящих звуков перкуссия, прибавляет всему сюжету сказочности и волшебства.
