about

«Drumazhur» was recorded live at Azhurnaya Rotunda in Moscow’s Gorky Park in the summer of 2018. The idea of such a concert came about, as always, spontaneously — the park management proposed to do a concert, cutting down on equipment costs to the minimum. As a result, we did not use any of the equipment — percussionists played without sound amplification. Why are percussionists? I will not dissemble — in any live set, I immediately begin to listen to the drummer and most of the concert I am folowing only him. In addition, I always wanted to repeat the big performance «77 Boa Drum» by Boredoms, which expanded its lineup to 77 drummers — on July 7, 2007 at 7:07 PM under the Brooklyn Bridge in New York they gave a turbo-percussion concert. And only this year I found another percussionists' quartet by Chris Corsano, Anja Jacobsen, Michaela Antalová and Øyvind Skarbø — but unlike the Drumazhur quartet they play a piece composed by Cris, not a improvisation.

In this performance we did not pursue any symbolism — we, like ordinary citizens, drooling from free improvisation (and drums), just wanted to see the lively interaction of the musicians and the power of simultaneously playing four percussion instruments. The names of performance percussionists came to mind instantly. Oksana Grigoryeva, Andrey Kim, Sergey Bolotin and Peter Ototsky took part in the action-packed battle of four drum sets. Each of the musicians has his own tactics for conducting dialogue in improvisations: Grigoryeva loves black grooves, Kim likes high-speed hardcore gimbal, Bolotin fills rhythmic structures with biting percussion details, and Ototsky compacts the remaining sound space with sensitive extra-rhythm trills.

«Drumazhur» is record of a one and a half hour performance of the quartet, where the musicians do solos, manage to play duets and cleverly split into a trio, and then turn into a massive quartet again, sounding sometimes arrhythmically, loudly and menacingly, sometimes quietly, meditatively and bewitchingly. The cross of four bass drums at once is amplified by the ringing of several cymbals at once, and multiple shots on snare drums will more likely resemble a sound illusion in which it is impossible to correctly set rhythmic accents or find an stressed vowel. In the middle of the concert, three saxophonists — Sergey Khramtsevich, Alexander Serechenko and Irina Kachan — joined the percussionists and heated the joint improvisation to a critical level.

That concert attracted a large outside unprepared spectators audience. The music captured their attention at the moment, turning it into full-fledged participants in the performance — screams, hooting and loud applause only add to this record of energy, passion and a special sense of freedom».
