Jakub Knera Kukoverov may seem like a joker, a contemporary version of Frank Zappa, but once you form a deeper bond with his music, it becomes clear that this is a mature composer, who – through his involvement in various groups – has developed his own original language.

about

Jenya Kukoverov is an artist, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, member of one of the first art-punk groups in modern Russia — IHNABTB. For the most part, Jenya plays a carefree jangle pop with a bit of colorful psychedelia; his texts are filled with urban romance and comic situations from the life of a dreamy observer with horn-rimmed glasses. At the same time, the fact of how Kukoverov manages to easily create grandiose melodic music, and even filled with naive, almost childish optimism, has not been thoroughly studied. Probably because spring changing in summer lives inside him. At the same time, stylistically all his musical expressions are very diverse — Jenya can compose kraut-rock compositions for a trip to distant lands, or a psychedelic rock opera in the spirit of the late Julian Cope about the benefits of collective drawing or just a pop album about the state of a drift.

The album «Hairy Finger & Invincible Clarinets» — a rare instrumental album in Jenya Kukoverov's discography — was recorded at the very beginning of April in just ten days. The main solo instrument here is the clarinet (on which a hairy finger plays). Stylistically, the album is made in the spirit of Jenya’s best pop songs — a savory drum machine taps the rhythm, guitars rings, bass guitar goes post-punk and the clarinet acts as a full-time vocalist, clearly outlining all the verses and choruses. «Hairy Finger & Invincible Clarinets» sometimes sounds as if Joe Meek make covers to Beck or The Go! Team in his own cartoon jazz style.

It is worth saying that this album was a certain reaction to quarantine in Moscow — realizing that in the near future it would be impossible to go outside without a special pass, Jenya picked up a clarinet, which he never knew how to play, and began to compose. «The main thing is not to watch any tutorials!», Kukoverov told himself and recorded first two compositions, playing the clarinet with the mouthpiece turned upside down.

The album «Hairy Finger & Invincible Clarinets» is an ode to sunny spring, the coming summer and absolute freedom: the smell of blossomed flowers, hare rides in public transport, carefree truancy in sandals on dusty boulevards, hooligan antics and funny conversations in parks for a cooling bottle of white wine. What we are so lacking now, and possibly will be missed in the near future.

«Hairy Finger & Invincible Clarinets» порой звучит, как если бы Beck или The Go!
