In the 1960s, many Soviet concert venues, as well as radio and television, presented a number of different versions of a standing out hit of those years — the song «Topolya» [«poplars»], written by the composer Grigory Ponomarenko on a text by Gennady Kolesnikov. The MEOW duo, consisting of composer and improviser Vladimir Gorlinsky (guitar) and music curator and performer Sasha Elina (voice), in 2015 began to form their repertoire with their own interpretation of this song. Now, as the sun sets on the duo, they are releasing their only studio recording — like the last postcard before a long, new journey.

«Beauty is a rejection of habit», the German composer Helmut Lachenmann once said. Normally these words require explanation. Now, instead of a thousand words, you can simply listen to «Topolya» [«Poplars»] by Sasha Elina and Vladimir Gorlinsky: thrilling and sad music, whose thrill and sadness are beautiful precisely because they are unusual. There is no «lump in the throat», «rupture of the aorta» and other platitudes common for pop and academic music — these platitudes haven’t been touching for a long time now, for they are trying to touch every single person as if on a conveyor belt. On the contrary, this music treads gently along untrodden paths and, as a result, you don’t know what will happen to it in the next minute or two. Its slowly unfolding unpredictability is mesmerizing. Its beauty is in sophisticated simplicity.

В 1960-е годы на советских концертных площадках, а также радио и телевидении, было представлено огромное количество версий и исполнений большого хита тех лет — песни «Тополя» композитора Григория Пономаренко на стихи Геннадия Колесникова. Дуэт МЯУ, состоящий из композитора и импровизатора Владимира Горлинского (гитара) и музыкального куратора и исполнителя Саши Елиной (голос), в 2015 году открыл свой репертуар собственной интерпретацией этой песни. Теперь, на закате существования дуэта, они выводят свою единственную студийную запись в свет — как последнюю открытку перед большим, уже новым путешествием.

«Красота — это отказ от привычки», — сказал как-то немецкий композитор Хельмут Лахенман. Обычно эти слова требуют пояснений. Теперь же, вместо тысячи слов, можно просто послушать «Тополя» Саши Елиной и Володи Горлинского — трепетную и печальную музыку, чьи трепет и печаль красивы именно потому, что непривычны. Тут нет проверенных эстрадной и академической попсой «комка в горле», «разрыва аорты» и прочих банальностей, которые давно уже не трогают, потому что силятся растрогать всех подряд в конвейерных масштабах. Напротив, эта музыка осторожно ступает по нехоженым тропам, и оттого не знаешь, что с ней случится через минуту или две. Ее медленно разворачивающаяся непредсказуемость завораживает. Ее красота — в сложно сконструированной простоте.
